7 Ways to Keep a Senior Cat Purring

February 1 2019
As your cat ages, she’ll still be a kitten at heart. However, Fluffy will become less interested in knocking everything off your coffee table, and will instead spend even more of her time napping. Your feline buddy will also need some extra TLC as she grows older. A Dunn, NC vet offers some senior cat care tips in this article.

Beds

Make sure your sleepy feline friend has lots of warm, comfy places to curl up in. Store-bought beds are fine, and are typically quite inexpensive, so we recommend setting a few out. You can also just set out some soft blankets or pillows.

Pet Ramps

Senior cats often have trouble jumping up to get to their favorite spots. Set out pet ramps or stairs for Fluffy.

Veterinary Care

Although your furry pal would probably rather take a nap than come visit us, proper veterinary care is crucial to her health. Early treatment and diagnosis can make a huge difference when dealing with medical issues in pets, so regular exams and screenings are extremely beneficial. Ask your vet for specific advice, including appointment schedules and signs of sickness to watch for.

Grooming

As Fluffy gets older, she may get stiff and sore. This will make it harder for her to groom herself. As a result, you may notice your kitty’s coat looking matted or greasy. Help your furball out by gently brushing her.

Playtime

Although your cat won’t be as frisky as she once was, it may not be hard to tempt her into pouncing on a wand toy, or chasing the dot from a laser pointer. Take time to play with your feline buddy. This will benefit her both mentally and physically.

Kitty Comforts

Keep your kitty’s comfort in mind. A litterbox with low walls will be easier for her to use than a regular one, while nightlights will help Fluffy find her way around after dark. Sometimes these little things can make a huge difference!

Love

At the end of the day, one of the best things you can do for your beloved pet is simply make sure she feels loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy! Talk to her, pet her, and let her hang out on your lap sometimes. Please feel free to contact us, your Dunn, NC vet clinic, anytime. We’re always happy to help!
