Summer is here! This may very well be Fido’s favorite time of year. Many of our canine patients love getting out and enjoying some fresh air and sunshine! Heat can be dangerous for dogs, however, so you’ll want to make sure your beloved pet doesn’t overheat. Read on as a local Dunn, NC vet lists some great ways to keep Fido cool and comfy, and keep that cute tail wagging.
Doggy Ice Cream
Who doesn’t enjoy an ice cream on a hot day? Fido can have his own doggy version of this summer classic. Many pet stores and supermarkets carry ice cream made just for our canine buddies. You can also make your own! Look online for recipes. Just stick to ingredients that are safe for your furry pal.
Many dog breeds, like Retrievers, are natural swimmers who love the water. Others? Not so much. If you aren’t sure if swimming would be appropriate for your pooch, check with your vet. Some dogs, like small breeds and brachycephalic pups, just aren’t suited for it. That doesn’t mean Fido can’t cool off, however. Get your furry buddy a kiddie pool, or let him play in the spray from a hose or sprinkler.
Somewhere between toys and swimming, we have the pet fountain. There are now versions that spray water when your dog steps on a panel. This can be pretty fun for Fido, and it’s also adorable to watch!
Puppy Play Zone
Do you have a yard for your pup to patrol? Make it more fun for Fido by adding a doghouse. This will offer him shade in summer and shelter in winter. You can also give your furry friend a kiddie pool to bury toys and treats in.
When it gets really hot, you may want to limit your dog’s outdoor time around midday. Walk and play with Fido in the morning and evening, when it’s cooler out. Take advantage of the weather, and bring your furry best bud to a dog park, or explore a new trail with him.
Puppy Cooling Aids
You can now get your canine companion a cooling jacket to wear, or offer him a cooling pet pad, which is sort of like a cold bed.
